6 Teachings on Resilience + Resourcefulness + Rest by Kim Glass 💖

I took a short hiatus from my Mind + Body + Soul Sessions and from my blog posts. Like most of my black brothers and sisters, I needed to focus on my mental health and make sure that I was putting out the right energy before returning. Though I am still very upset, hurt, angry and frustrated, I won't let that stop me from finding joy, love, positivity and peace in every single day.


Today, I have found power in shining a light on my beautiful sister, Kim Glass. Not only is she strong, empowering and beautiful black woman but she is also a silver-medal winning Olympian in volleyball, an amazing personal trainer and captivating model. We had a chance to sit down for a beautiful discussion on being resilient, resourceful and getting the rest we all need. Below, I've included some valuable tips from our inspiring interview.



BEING RESILIENT...

  • WHAT IS THIS TEACHING ME? When faced with challenges first recognize that we can always learn some sort of lesson from every experience. It is important to process it in the moment, embrace the emotions, learn from them before moving on. Do your best not to avoid or suppress whatever you are feeling, as that may set you back rather than propel you forward.

  • “The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.” -Steve Maraboli. When preparing to bounce back from any experience in life, we must let go of the things we can not change and focus on the things that we can. We can not change the past, however we have the power to shape the future. It is imperative that we focus on what is presently happening within you, learn to find balance and learn to let go in order to keep moving onward.

BEING RESOURCEFUL...

  • Do you have a planner? Kim and I both use planners and advise our friends to keep them as well. Write in it weekly or daily and keep it visible. It is our best practice to keep ourselves organized and constantly aware of what we need to do as well as where we need to be. We use our planners not just for our business itinerary but also to schedule in appointments with ourselves.

  • "Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can." -Arthur Ashe. Words that I live by and that I pass on to everyone who trains with me. You must use everything you have to achieve everything you want. Both Kim and I pride ourselves on giving all of our best energy to all that we do. We also practice reaching out and shining a light on others that possess skills, talents and gifts that we may not necessarily have. This is a great time to expand your network, diversify your network and find people that you can trust to help you start whatever you are reaching for.

AND REST!

  • Life is all about BALANCE. You can't just go nonstop in your car and not refuel. Even an electric car needs to be recharged. Remember, it is important to avoid draining yourself completely for if you do you'll have nothing left to give. Resting, taking baths, taking scenic walks outdoors and even mediating are great ways to fill yourself up before pouring into the world.

  • LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. Often times you will get direct signals that your body needs rest and relaxation. Listen always! There is a saying that reads, "if you listen to your body when it whispers, you won't have to hear it scream." ...and as Kim has reminded me, don't forget to "be kind to yourself always!"
